Randolph College – Harry Potter and Religion – Visiting Assistant Professor – Online – Summer 2019

How clear and complete was the syllabus? Were assignments, exams, and texts helpful in reaching the goals of the course?

“The syllabus was clear and assignments were difficult but achievable.”

“The class was extremely well assembled. The syllabus and weekly expectations were laid out clearly on Moodle, the readings were all accessible, and everything felt very relevant. I LOVED that Dr. Keegan did not require purchasing any textbooks; it made the course feel even more accessible.”

“It was clear and precise. Once I figured out the online system it was easier.”

Comment on the preparation of the instructor and the clarity, pace, and methods of instruction.

“I very much enjoyed the videos Dr. Keegan created as a form of ‘online lecture.’ As a matter of fact, this aspect of the course was almost better than in-person classes because I was able to listen to the lectures on repeat/pause and rewind as needed.”

“The pace seemed a bit rushed in the final weeks.”

“She was very prepared and clear in all her instructions.”

How responsive was the instructor?

“Very responsive to assignments and questions asked.”

“Very.”

What is your overall evaluation of the course? Please share your suggestions or comments.

“This is an interesting course that throws a curveball when you think what it is about at the start of the class.”

“I absolutely loved the course materials and the topics examined. Dr. Keegan was more present than I could have ever expected an online course's instructor to be. I noticed that my classmates (myself included) really waited until last minute to post in the discussion forum. While this was nice and played to the ‘take the course in your own time’ aspect of online classes, it meant that we did not really have an opportunity to hear one another’s thoughts and authentically respond. My suggestion would be to perhaps attempt to coordinate a class-wide zoom chat or something of that nature and schedule it once every other week or something like that. This way, we would be ‘forced’ to actually genuinely interact. Perhaps offer the option of a zoom chat in lieu of posting in the moodle discussion forum? Just a thought! All in all, 10/10!”

“I actually enjoyed the class very much. I also liked that I could do the work at my own pace and work ahead if I wanted.”

“Brennan Keegan is hands down one of the best professors I've ever had at Duke University. She is an angel incarnate. She has opened my eyes to so many ideas and helped me learn how to effectively communicate sensitive topics like religion. I got very close with her through flunches and can vehemently support that she prioritizes her teaching and her students over everything! She fostered a lovely and collaborative classroom environment. I thoroughly looked forward to this class every week. I'm sad that she's leaving Duke!”
